LJS Abbreviations

All fandoms rely on abbreviations. It’s easier to type “LJS” than to use “L.J. Smith” all the time, for example. Of course, after you’ve used the abbreviations for so long, they can seem like words in their own right, and whenever I’m talking with fellow LJS fans in person, I always have that awkward moment: Should I say “Dark Visions” or “DV”?

As I mentioned in the Common Misconception II post, the way fans “count” books is important, especially when it comes to abbreviations. If I say NW3, I mean Spellbinder, the third book in the series; a newer fan may assume I’m referring to the third omnibus, which contains books seven, eight, and nine. Throughout this Tumblr, I will use the non-omnibus numbering system, and as new books are published, I will add the most common abbreviations to this post.

LJS = L.J. Smith
TT or TTales= Twilight Tales, the biggest LJS fanworks archive)
LJS100 = a drabble writing community
LJSanta = a Secret Santa project within the LJS fandom where you sign up, get some prompts, and write a fanfic for a fellow fan, and get one in turn (though not necessarily from the person you wrote for).

NotS = Night of the Solstice
HoV = Heart of Valor

VD* = The Vampire Diaries (individual books tend to be identified by number: VD1, VD2, VD3, VD4)
VD-R = The Vampire Diaries: The Return (VD5, VD6, VD7 [to come])

* = Yes, we’re all aware that it could also stand for “venereal disease”. Most of the fandom’s old-timers, though, are so used to using VD that we don’t even associate anything else with the letters. With the arrival of the TV adaptation, though, many people are starting to use TVD—and, in line with that, TSC for The Secret Circle. I haven’t seen TFG used widely yet, though. Using title abbreviations (e.g., VD: TA for Vampire Diaries: The Awakening) isn’t common for any of the trilogies, largely because each trilogy is seen as a complete unit, whereas the Night World books can be read independently of the others and still make sense.

SC = The Secret Circle (SC1, SC2, SC3)
FG = The Forbidden Game (FG1, FG2, FG3)
DV = Dark Visions (DV1, DV2, DV3)

NW = Night World
NW1 or NW-SV = Night World: Secret Vampire
NW2 or NW-DoD = Night World: Daughters of Darkness (I’ve never seen NW-DD, but it would be understood.)
NW3 or NW-SB (or NW-E) = Night World: Spellbinder (in the UK, Enchantress)
NW4 or NW-DA = Night World: Dark Angel
NW5 or NW-TC = Night World: The Chosen (NW-C is also used, but doesn’t seem as common)
NW6 or NW-SM = Night World: Soulmate (Even though “Soulmate” is put as one word, the NW-S abbreviation is rare.)
NW7 or NW-H = Night World: Huntress
NW8 or NW-BD = Night World: Black Dawn
NW9 or NW-WL = Night World: Witchlight (Even though “Witchlight” is given as one word, the NW-W abbreviation is rare.)
NW10 or NW-SF = Night World: Strange Fate (not yet released)
